Monster walter dean myers graphic novel5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Though this graphic adaptation requires close and focused attention to unpack at times, the superbly rewarding format serves to powerfully emphasize Myers’ themes of perspective and the quest to see one’s self clearly. Using panels like a filmstrip, Sims and Anyabwile achieve several remarkably cinematic effects: alternating grids and splash pages captures the tension between close-up and long shots the use of jittery lettering and uneven word balloons injects deeper anxiety into the “sound design” having a jury view the events recounted in testimony as a movie audience creates incisive visual metaphors. Told as a trial with flashbacks to the robbery and moments in the lives of those affected, Sims’ adaptation, aided by Anyabwile’s ingenious black-and-white comic-book-style sequential art, perfectly captures the natural suspense of a courtroom drama. Steve’s story would be dramatic in any format, but this graphic adaptation is particularly well suited to the tale. African American teen Steve Harmon is a burgeoning filmmaker, and his interest in cinema shapes his account of being on trial for his role in a robbery that resulted in murder. Myers’ award-winning 1999 novel was a bold experiment in form, telling portions of the story in, among other things, a screenplay. ![]()

For “Goliath”, there was so much intriguing parts of a story balanced together. I think this could be one of the best books out of the three mainly because of the different things it left the reader thinking about. The story follows through the perspective of Deryn, a girl pretending to be a male soldier working in the British Air Service, and Alek, an Austrian prince who lives with the threat of the Germans trying to “dispose” of him. ![]() This novel involves a British airship made of a whale, called Leviathan, flying around the world as part of their journey during the alternative World War I. ![]() “Goliath”, the third and final volume of the Leviathan trilogy written by Scott Westerfeld, is the best way to end this trilogy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Most know of her romantic dalliances that, in the end, led to her demise, but what was her reign like as queen? What was the court of Henry VIII like during his fifth marriage as his health was failing? In Gareth Russell’s brilliant biography, “Young and Damned and Fair: The Life and Tragedy of Catherine Howard at the Court of Henry VIII”, he dives deep into the archives to shine a light on the life of this tragic and young queen. Her story is full of rumors and myths, just like her cousin Anne Boleyn. ![]() Her name was Catherine Howard, Henry’s youngest bride. We all know the stories of the queens, especially Anne Boleyn, but the fifth wife and the second one to be beheaded tend to be cast aside for some of the more intriguing tales. The concept's a pretty good one - royal siblings forced to fight for the right to rule their land, reminding me of Three Dark Crowns even though I haven't read it yet - but the execution kinda fell flat for me. Normally, I love me a good Joelle Charbonneau book, but this one - her first stab at the fantasy genre, as far as I know - left me a little wanting. ![]() Mother of Pearl by Mary Morrissy5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() McCombs’ poem,"The River and Under the River" was chosen by Adrienne Rich for inclusion in The Best American Poetry 1996. Most of Shakespeare’s material was obtained from Lancaster writers after the war. He is most famously portrayed as an evil hunchback by Shakespeare in the play that bears his name. ![]() Penman actually conducted a great deal of research on this period before writing the book and determined that Richard III was the victim of history being written by the victors. ![]() The book is also about Richard III who has been vilified by history. This is a story about the War of the Roses in Fifteenth Century England where the Houses of York and Lancaster fought for the throne. I’ve probably read hundreds of books in the genre, but my favorite is hands down Sharon Kay Penman’s The Sunne in Splendor. I’ve always been a huge fan of history and historical fiction.
